Background on the Event:

Since 2012, Brigham & Women’s Hospital has been hosting shark tanks to fund innovative and high-risk/high impact projects in the basic, clinical, digital and translational realms through its Health & Technology Innovation Awards. Sponsored by the Brigham Research Institute (BRI) and the BWH Health & Technology Subcommittee, these awards aim to advance projects that have the potential to make an impact in one or more of the following domains – biomedical research, healthcare delivery, the generation of new companies/products/services, cost savings, care quality and provider burnout. Since 2012, more than $1 million has been distributed to BWH investigators through these awards.

This year, with the generous support of the McGraw Family, this cycle’s Request for Applications includes a special track focused on advancing innovations related to solving the opioid crisis which has resulted in the loss of over 2000 lives in the past year in Massachusetts alone. Novel ideas that seek to address questions and challenges related to the opioid epidemic including, but not limited to, research on addiction, adverse effects, alternate pain management strategies, genetic susceptibility to opioid abuse, new tools for opioid research, diagnosis/treatment, management of infectious diseases related to opioid abuse, withdrawal, personalized medicine were awarded.

Highlights from the BRI Director 2018-2020

During Fiscal Year 2019, the Brigham Research Institute provided support to activities defined through a BRI-wide strategic assessment and planning process the previous year. Research Roundtables, thematic discussions focused on areas aligned with programs/centers to define priorities in those areas and foster innovation and collaboration.

The BRI distributed $3.22 Million in internal awards in FY2019. These awards ranged from $500 poster awards to the $500,000 BRI Director’s Transformative Award. The BRI implemented the solicitation and selection process for the newly launched President’s Scholar Awards, intended to support and recognize Assistant or Associate Professors at the Brigham who have made outstanding contributions to their chosen field of research and who have demonstrated exceptional potential.

We continued hosting bi-annual research faculty and trainee lunches and in 2019, hosting two lunches for each group:

  • Postdocs and Trainees
  • Instructors
  • Assistant Professors
  • Associate Professors
  • Professors

Our Scientific Advisory Board added a new member, now comprised of nine highly accomplished scientific and industry leaders who provide guidance to enrich our strategies to promote biomedical advances at the Brigham. The Board meets annually.

The BRI launched a new monthly newsletter, Science Spotlight, to celebrate Brigham faculty publications in high impact journals and keep the research community informed about the work of their peers.

Brigham researchers published more than 9,400 publications in 2019 (ranking second among healthcare institutions in the world in terms of total article count, according to Nature Index), with close to 500 of these in top-rated journals.

Brigham research revenue was $698 Million in FY2019, representing nearly a quarter of the hospital’s revenue.

Q&A with Paul Anderson, MD, PhD: Research and Innovation in the Time of COVID-19

Clinical and Research News (CRN) recently published a Q&A with Paul Anderson:

“In March, research leadership made an unprecedented decision. To help reduce the spread of COVID-19, the Brigham shut down the majority of its physical research labs. But that hasn’t stopped research teams from innovating. Labs that can do so are performing their work remotely, and labs that are performing essential functions, including COVID-19 research, are continuing their critical work on site.

Paul Anderson, MD, PhD, Senior Vice President of Research and Education, Chief Academic Office for the Brigham

Paul Anderson, MD, PhD, senior vice president of research and education and chief academic officer for the Brigham, recently answered questions about the laboratory shutdown, the launch of the Center for COVID Innovation and his hopes for the future.

In addition, the Brigham and Mass General research communities have come together to launch the Mass General Brigham Center for COVID Innovation (MGBCCI).

Paul Anderson, MD, PhD

Integration with IRB Review and CTO Activities – Oversight Approval Required PRIOR to IRB Review and CTO Action

Integration with IRB Review and CTO Activities – Oversight Approval Required PRIOR to IRB Review and CTO Action

Download Intake Form Here

March 30, 2020
Given the volume of COVID-19 research being initiated, leadership at each of our hospitals has established respective COVID-19 MGH and BWH Oversight Committees’ to manage and prioritize all COVID-related clinical studies (e.g., surveys, observational studies, sample collections, trials, etc.). Partners IRB and CTO will now prioritize COVID-related clinical studies including clinical trials when determined by these committees to be appropriate.
[vc_empty_space]
Their formal assessments will need to be completed prior to submission to the IRB or CTO (other than confidentiality agreements). Studies will need to attach written confirmation of approval from the Chair of the MGH or BWH Committee that reviewed the clinical study at the time of submission. If the study is being implemented at both MGH and BWH (one Lead PI and one Site PI), the Lead PI will need to submit approval from each of the Committees.
[vc_empty_space]
Of note, studies performed across our system will take priority. Approval for the hospital with the designated Site PI may continue to be added along with their Oversight Committee’s approval after approval of the Lead PI’s protocol.
[vc_empty_space]
Both IRB and CTO are committed to supporting investigators to rapidly implement their clinical research and are willing to provide guidance to strengthen proposals but will not formally act on the proposals until the oversight committees have approved.
[vc_empty_space]
To submit a project for review by the BWH COVID Scientific Review Committee, please complete a project intake form. Please send the completed intake form and all associated documents to BWHCOVIDreview@partners.org.
